Nationals Book It After Foul Ball Accidentally Smashes Capitol Rotunda

May 8, 2008 | Onion Sports

Capitol Building

WASHINGTON, DC—An 8,976-foot foul ball off the bat of Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman crashed through the U.S. Capitol Building rotunda Sunday afternoon, prompting both the Nationals and the opposing Pittsburgh Pirates to gasp, turn to each other in shock, and immediately run full speed out of Nationals Park.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was headed straight toward Capitol Hill—I just kept saying to myself, 'Not the dome, not the dome, not the dome,'" Zimmerman said. Both teams, all four umpires, and the 32,457 fans in attendance winced in horror, however, as the ball kept carrying, made a loud smashing noise, and left a gaping hole in the rotunda's neoclassical architecture.

"We are so dead," Zimmerman added.

As the teams grabbed the bases and scrambled out of the stadium, the Pirates yelled to the Nationals that they were in "big trouble." The Nationals refuted that claim, screaming that "if [Pirates left-fielder] Jason [Bay] could run at all, he would've tracked down the ball and caught it" before it struck the 200-year-old structure, which stands 1.7 miles from the ballpark.

However, as soon as the teams heard the Capitol Building's front door swing open, they put their differences aside and sped frantically back to their hotel rooms.

"Congress is going to be so mad," said Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, peering out his window, expecting to see the 535 members of the House and Senate pull into the hotel parking lot. "This was the worst time to do it, too, because they're already in a bad mood, what with the election stuff and the war and the recession, and all."

"Aw, man, we're never gonna get that ball back," Johnson added.

The team, however, has urged outfielder Lastings Milledge to dress up in a suit, sneak into the Capitol Building, retrieve the ball, and make the necessary repairs on the shattered sandstone walls of the dome before anyone notices.

According to eyewitnesses in the Capitol, the ball smashed into the dome at about 3:35 p.m., tore through the Apotheosis Of Washington—a 150-year-old, 4,664-square-foot fresco painted on the inside of the rotunda—and broke the arm off of a National Statuary Hall sculpture of William Jennings Bryan. The ball then bounced into the Senate Chamber, where it interrupted a vote on a $542.5 billion defense authorization bill, and landed directly in the mashed potatoes of early-dining Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), covering him with gravy and prompting him to exclaim, "Zimmer-maaaaannnn!"

Although McConnell had no evidence at the time that Zimmerman was responsible for the damages, he was the chief suspect, as he is the only National able to hit the ball farther than 300 feet. Furthermore, Zimmerman dented McConnell's 1998 Buick LeSabre last week when he overthrew first base by 15,000 feet on a routine grounder.

"This is unacceptable—Capitol rotundas don't just grow on trees, you know," read a statement drafted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the event. "Not only are these damages going to cost a fortune—a fortune—to repair, but we specifically told the Washington Nationals baseball organization a thousand times before the season started to be extra-careful and to try not to hit the ball to left field."

The statement went on to demand that the Nationals pay for all the damages, which total over $400 million—more than five times the entire team payroll. Because of this, players are expected to either find part-time jobs to cover the cost or work off the expenses by taking positions as congressional aides in the offseason.

The Pirates have promised to chip in $5, claiming that is all they have right now.

"This stinks," said Zimmerman, who attempted to persuade local resident Henry Adelson, a Nationals season-ticket holder and D.C.-area insurance claims adjuster, to take the rap for him and say he was the one who hit the ball. "We shouldn't have to stop playing just because the lousy U.S. Capitol got in the way. And also hitting the Capitol Building should be an automatic home run."

On Tuesday, Congress announced an initiative to move the Nationals franchise from D.C. to Oklahoma City, Portland, or anywhere far enough away that a batted ball or errant throw will not cause significant damage to American landmarks.

However, President Bush has called such actions "unnecessary" and "too harsh," saying that all will be forgiven if the players come down from their hotel rooms, say they're sorry, promise to be more careful, and allow Bush to participate in team batting practice every day from now through the 2016 season.

Mom sent to jail after Disney line-jump fight

By Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. — A mother convicted of beating another woman at Walt Disney World for allegedly cutting in line has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Victoria Walker apologized to the victim and was given credit for 32 days already served. The 52-year-old Anniston, Ala., woman was accused of beating and kicking Aimee Krause in May 2007 in line at Disney's Mad Tea Party.

Judge Jose Rodriguez said he took into account Walker's remorse. She admitted pulling Krause's hair but said the central Florida woman provoked her.

First order of business; Here's a link to my new puppy!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.pawpatchpets.com/Pugpage.html
They look a little like rats right now, but in a few weeks time the should start to resemble their parents (or at least dogs in general).

Second order, we had the BEST time at the Bowers wedding last weekend!  It was soooo beautiful.  And they treated us like GOLD!  We were picked up by the bride's (Andrea's) Aunt at the airport who took us straight to the rehearsal dinner.  We were famished after the plane ride and thankful for the food.  Once everyone had left we stuck around and played Wii tennis with the Groom (Chris) untill about 1:30 am when he drove us to our hotel room.  By the way - he was AMAZING at Wii Tennis and put us to shame.

The wedding was at a beautiful Catholic church the next evening, followed by the reception.  We got to drive from the wedding to the reception in the second limo with Andrea and Chris' cousins.  It was the first time I have ever been in a limo - man are those nice.   There were fabulous appetizers, a string quartet and an open bar to greet us at the reception.  They did such a neat thing, they asked us for pictures of ourselves ahead of time and made the guestbook out of pictures!  So we got a UCSB page for Chris, Tom and I.

Most weddings i've been to there hasn't been much dancing.  There was definitely dancing here.  Even Tom (to my right) got out on the floor for a song.

And the cream of the crop was when I caught the bouquet!  Andrea's brother Nick caught the garter belt and had to put it on my leg since I caught the bouquet.  The MC said somethign corney like, the higher you put it up her leg the more years of happiness for the bride and groom.  I love this picture because I dont think Nick could have been any farther away from my leg, he stops right there above my knee, But I can' t blame him when Chris is standing 5 feet away taking the picture!

Last but not least, Baseball is back!! Today was the home opener for the Nationals.  We had to miss it because it was a 1:05pm game and some of us in DC have to work.  We did get tickets for tomorrow nights game though.  My work knows i'm a HUGE fan and people kept walking past my desk to ask me what the score was because they knew I was checking it all day.  We lost 9-2, horrible game, but this is going to be a tough season because we are starting with a whole new young team.  I also joined a Fantasy Baseball team this year with Chris.  I think this will only increase my addiction to baseball.

We have so much coming up in the next 2 months.  At the end of March we are attending a wedding in Fort Lauderdale for our friends Chris and Andrea who we know from college.  It will be fun to see how they planned everything.  The more weddings we go to the more was can see what was good and bad for our own.  (Who am I kidding?!  The more wedding we go the more I see for MY own wedding.  As long as I’m looking hot and there’s an open bar Chris will be in heaven.)

After that we have a track weekend the sixth of April back in California.  I am so excited that Chris will finally get to experience my dad’s hobby first hand.  We are going to rent a mini cooper along with my brothers Civic and my dads S2000 and take turns driving around the Button willow Raceway.  The track is located about an hour and ½ north of LA.

Then, the big trip to Disneyworld the first week of May.  I can hardly contain myself.  I have planned every aspect of the trip.  I’ve planned all the meals and a maybe a too detailed itinerary.  But, we only have 6 days (4 full) so I want to try to make the most of it.  As of now I have it planned that we get to the parks at opening everyday but I know in my heart that I will not be getting to the parks at 8.  Maybe the first morning when I’m more excited then tired.  We have started to work out because I read that the average amount of walking is 13 miles a day – I don’t want to have one of my days be me sleeping at the hotel while Chris rubs my feet.  Hmmm, maybe I should rethink that.

Then at the end of March the girls and I are going to New York for 2 nights!  Hopefully I will be taking off the later part of that week to watch my new pug!!!!!

This weekend is the big move. I am a little sad to leave our place now but since our new Apartment is twice the size and only two blocks away I really can't shed a tear. I'm anxious to get the keys on Saturday and check out the apartment with out all the old tenents crap in it. The only catch is that we are getting a roommate. It's definitely not a bad thing because we both love Michael Wiener and it is going to be an awesome year. The new place also allows for pets - So, Michael is bringing his cat and I will be in the possession of a cute puppy pug in the next few months.  I also have a small patio off my room and a Jacuzzi Tub.

We are working out the details for a Wii Tennis Tourney that would include prizes and or drinking. The Wii is part of the reason for the big move. We desperately needed more space. Poker Night should also be a much less crowded event if we can get the game going again. It seems that there are too many things going on on Wednesdays. Out UCSB Alumni Meetings are on Wednesday and we can't have it tonight because our living room is full of boxes, and next weekend is Valentines day. Even though you couldn't PAY me to go out to dinner on Valentines day I'm sure enough of our friends are celebrating the day of love by over crowding and overpaying at the local eateries.

It snowed about 2 inches last night and the city is beautiful. Too bad I'm stuck inside!  It would be a perfect day to use our new camera. Hopefully it will snow again so that we can have a photo day.  Today feels like summer at 27 degrees since the last two days have been -4 and 7 degrees with the wind chill factor.  Never in my life have I been so cold.
